The Making of Prainbork Pt.1

Today’s post chronicles the making of the Prainbork album artwork. In case you’re not familiar with the fantastic Prainbork, check these out:

Prainbork is a project by the great Art Bertik Marquez, a Southern California Based music artist who also happens to be my good friend. Fun fact: Prainbork is actually intimately connected to Pi, since the project begain on a March 14, or 3.14.

Anyway, Artie wanted some help for his album and he showed me his hand-drawn sketch:

Notice the band name is “Brainpork,” not “Prainbork.” No, this was not a typo. At the time, the working band name was Brainpork, as as you shall read later, was changed to “Prainbork” afterwards.

I was excited about the music and it wasn't difficult to come up with ideas to spice up the cover:

essentially, the cover showcases characters from the songs. Soon after this cover, "BrainPork" became "Prainbork." During the process of discussing the band name, Artie fumbled the pronunciation saying “Prainbork” instead of “Brainpork.” We looked at each other and burst out laughing, and a classic name was born instantly. Prainbork sounds like a mythical beast, a giggling chimerical a concoction of paradoxes glued together with a band-aid. This title seemed to describe the spirit of the music perfectly, so “Prainbork” it stayed. Since the name of the band changed, we changed the logo as well:

We added this to the cover and here is the product:

We initially wanted to title the album "Feast of the Prainbork," but that sounded more like a scary album title so we left it out and decided to use it in the future. By this point I started playing around with the color scheme a bit, and got what became the final version:

Among the changes, note the color boxes around some of the main characters and a predominant green hue, as well as removal of the acid gumdrops. This was the cover we decided to use for the cd album, which is also the itunes artwork. However, just for the heck of it, we made a special cover for youtube:

The whole process took about one year to complete, between our "adult"jobs and other project distractions. Looking back, we had a great time making the cover and of course it was only the beginning.

For part two, I will include further artwork that didn't make it on the album and a note about making the Prainbork promotional video!
